We met with Ramadan Bechir Ramadan, the official from the Chadian refugee agency (CNARR) who will be going with us to Iraq. After finding ourselves a translator and then getting through some initial “business” negotiations, he graciously offered assistance with anything we might need during our stay here in Chad and thanked the American Government and the American people for always supporting humanitarian efforts.
Some years ago, Ramadan escorted then Senator Barack Obama during his trip to the Darfuri refugee camps in Eastern Chad. Now, he will be escorting Darfur United to Iraq. He is working on the travel documents for the 17 refugees and says he will have them soon. “Don’t worry. I will take care of it.”
I try not to worry, but I do worry. It keeps me on my toes. Doing what we do, I pretty much stay on my toes the whole time out here. Strong toes needed.
